Learn how to work effectively as a member of a digital team and make full use of the communication and collaboration tools in Microsoft Teams and Office 365. Successful completion of the full course leads to the Digital Collaboration with Microsoft Teams and Office 365 digital badge and certificate.

Microsoft Teams provides a central hub for teams to have conversations (text or video), meetings and share files. Collaboration is facilitated by the integration of Office 365 services – SharePoint, OneNote, Forms, Planner & more - are built-in, giving you access to files and tools in one place.

This course explores how Microsoft Teams and Office 365 can be used to improve communication and collaboration for your team - whether it is a project group, a student cohort or a group of colleagues.

There are two versions of this course : a taster session and the full training course. The Taster session introduces the software and explores key features, it lasts two hours.

The Full Course consists of two mandatory face-to-face training sessions, that are each 2-hours long and 1-2 hours of additional learning in the form a group assessment. Estimated learning time: 5–6 hours.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course, however you might want to explore some of the Office 365 apps that are available (such as Teams, OneNote and Yammer).

Course Structure

Taster Session

The taster session explains what Microsoft Teams and Office 365 are and how they can be useful to your team to improve communication and collaboration. The session suggests potential scenarios for using Teams and Office 365, such as for project teams, for teaching or for students to collaborate on assignments. Key features of the Teams software are introduced. The taster session lasts two hours.


Full Course

The full course is comprised of​ two mandatory face-to-face training sessions, that are each 2-hours long and an additional 1-2 hours of learning in the form a practical group assessment.

The first session explains what Microsoft Teams and Office 365 are and how they can be useful to your team to improve communication and collaboration. The session suggests potential scenarios for using Teams and Office 365. Key features of the Teams software are introduced, as is OneNote, which can be used to store and share team notes.

The second session begins by introducing the other Office 365 communication service: Yammer. You will learn when it is most appropriate to use Teams, Yammer and email. SharePoint tools for managing and collaborating on shared documents are explored. Teams features that help you organise your content are explained. The session finishes by introducing three other Office 365 services: Planner, Forms and Stream.

The final component of the course is a practical group assessment. You will use Teams and Office 365 throughout the training sessions and for 1-2 hours of additional learning, to collaborate with your group on a task: Selling the benefits of Microsoft Teams to your team.

Estimated amount of learning time:

  • Classroom teaching:
    • Session I - 2 hours
    • Session II - 2 hours
  • Practical group assessment: 1 - 2 hours
For a total of between 5 - 6 hours.



Digital Badge Certification

The Digital Collaboration with Microsoft Teams and Office 365 badge

Successful completion of the full course leads to the Digital Collaboration with Microsoft Teams and Office 365 digital badge and certificate.

The digital badge is issued by Cardiff Metropolitan University through the Acclaim platform.

To complete the course and gain the digital badge, learners are required to complete the face-to-face training and pass a group assessment. The assessment requires that learners use Teams and Office 365 to collaborate on a series of tasks.

Earners of the digital badge are able to work effectively as a member of a digital team and make full use of the communication and collaboration tools in Microsoft Teams and Office 365. They have proven that they are able to: use a range of Teams features to communicate with colleagues, utilise SharePoint to share and manage documents, choose the most appropriate tool for different types of communication & incorporate Office 365 services such as OneNote and Planner into their digital collaboration practices.

Specific Learning Outcomes

Taster session

On completion of the taster session trainees should be able to: 

  • Use the full range of Teams features to communicate with team members through text, video and audio meetings.
  • Create new Teams and understand the template options that are available.
  • Utilise Teams and SharePoint Online to access, store and upload shared documents, securely.
  • Use OneNote to create, organise and share notes between team members.
  • Identify the most appropriate communication tool (e.g. Teams, Yammer, email) for common situations.

Full Course

On completion of the full training course trainees should be able to:

  • Use the full range of Teams features to communicate with team members through text, video and audio meetings.
  • Create new Teams and understand the template options that are available.
  • Utilise Teams and SharePoint Online to access, store and upload shared documents, securely.
  • Use OneNote to create, organise and share notes between team members.
  • Identify the most appropriate communication tool (e.g. Teams, Yammer, email) for common situations.
  • Use Yammer to connect to your “outer loop” of contacts; to discuss ideas, initiatives and updates.
  • Make use of SharePoint Online features, such as real-time collaboration and version history to enhance the way documents are managed.
  • Identify the most appropriate document storage platform (e.g. OneDrive for Business, SharePoint 2016, SharePoint Online) for common situations.
  • Organise and search your Teams, conversations and documents.
  • Utilise other Office 365 "group-based" services that are available when using Teams - such as, Planner (project management), Forms (data capture) and Stream (video hosting).
